Groin Hernias in Elderly Patients




Abstract
This study is a clinical study of elderly patients (above 65 years) surgically treated in diagnosis of groin hernias at the Department of Surgery, College of Medicine, Chonnam National University.
The results were as follows;
1) The incidence of elderly patients was 32 cases (10.1%) among 318 cases surgically treate3 during 8 years, consisted of male 31 cases and female I case.
2) The types were indirect in 22 cases (68%), direct 9 cases (28%), incarcerated 7 cases (22%), and strangulated 2 cases (6%). I case in female was femoral hernia.
3) The concomitant diseases were follows in order of frequency: pulmonary disease 10 cases (31 %), cardiovascular disease 6 cases(l9%) and others 2 cases(6%).
4) The operative methods were Shouldice (56%), Bassini (28%), MacVay (13%0) and modified Andrews (3%).
5) The technique of anesthesia were mainly local and spinal anesthesia (75
6) The postoperative complications were 5 cases (16%): wound infection 3 cases, scrotal edema 1 case and postoperative pneumonia 1 case.
7) The mean admission time was 9.8 days.
8) The mortality rate was none, but 2 cases treated with Bassini methods were recurred and so reoperated using Souldice methods effectively.
